The IAPD celebrates and embraces good news from the WHO: on 1 October WHO announced updates to its Model List of Essential Medicines for Adults and Children, three of which – topical fluoride-containing preparations (such as toothpaste), glass ionomer cement and silver diamine fluoride – are dental treatments featured for the first time.

The IAPD is looking forward to continuing to develop their relationship and work together with WHO to advance children’s oral health globally. About two years ago, the IAPD President and Secretary General met with the WHO – as we slowly exit the pandemic, prospects of a new meeting between IAPD and WHO is drawing closer. WHO participated at the last IAPD congress at the symposium about ECC, we look forward to maintaining an ongoing relationship.
In September 2019 Ari Kupietzky and Marcelo Bönecker of the IAPD visited WHO in Geneve, Switzerland. Before the world completely changed. Although the interaction is virtual, we are proud to still be achieving our goals as the Global Voice for Children’s Oral Health.
Presented at the 28th Congress of the IAPD, this lecture covers the following: Publishing is a way for scientists to disseminate ideas. Pressures from promotion committees, misguided incentive structures, and other factors have prompted many investigators to treat publishing as the end goal rather than a means to achieving impact.
